History and Traditions of Mardi Gras

History and Traditions of Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras refers to the culmination of events of the Carnival celebrations beginning on or after Epiphany and ending on Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday” when translated to English, in reference to the last night of consuming rich, fatty foods before the ritual of fasting that the Lenten season brings. The carnival is an important celebration for Catholic Europeans, such as the French, who brought the Mardi Gras to North America.

French Canadian Pierre D’Iberville and his men explored the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico and in 1699, set up camp on the river’s West Bank, 60 miles south of present-day New Orleans. They christened it Pointe du Mardi Gras on Mardi Gras Day.

With an incredible five unanswered runs the South Carolina Gamecocks Softball Team was able to grab a come-from-behind victory over the Villanova Wildcats in an excruciating 5-4 upset. Finding themselves down 4-0, South Carolina initiated its comeback in the sixth as Gamecock Lauren Lackey led off with a triple and scored on Laura Mendes’ groundout in answer to the Wildcat’s three runs of the inning. Down 4-1 going into the bottom of the 7th inning, it took a couple of freshmen, Julie Sarratt and Dana Hathorn, and sophomore shortstop Samie Garcia to start the rally that enabled South Carolina to come up with the one-point 5-4 victory over the Wildcats in the Homewood Suites/Hilton Garden Inn Florida Gulf Coast University Tournament that fateful Saturday afternoon, on February 19, 2011.

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a "doomsday" seedbank located near the village of Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen, a remote Norwegian island in the Arctic Svalbard archipelago. Approximately 800 miles from the North Pole, the underground facility, carved about 400 feet inside a frozen mountainside, eventually will store seed samples of about three million crop varieties. The hope is that the high-tech vault will prevent the extinction of agricultural crops in case of war, natural disasters, disease, or lack of funding. The project also aims to preserve seeds of rarer crop varieties that are slowly becoming extinct, specifically the top 10 percent most endangered plants.
