Lincoln: A Brief Guide
Lincoln: A Brief Guide
The city was conquered and occupied by the Romans sometime in AD 48, and
was later on established as the Lindum Colonia, a settlement for army
veterans. The settlement flourished through the early 4th
century, being accessible from the sea through the River Trent and River
Witham, until Lindum Colonia and its waterways fell into decline. Today, the city’s economy thrives in large part due to public
administration, trade, arable farming and tourism. Industrial pioneer
Ruston, an industrial equipment manufacturer established in the city in
1840, still remains in Lincoln and is now a part of Siemens group of
Germany. Lincoln’s IT industry is also growing, as are its other
conventional small businesses. Two electronics companies can be found in
Lincoln: e2v, formerly known as Associated Electrical Industries, and
Dynex Semiconductor, formerly known as Marconi Electronic Devices.
Numerous new businesses have also sprung up in and around Lincoln,
including St. Mark’s Square which houses Debenhams. Other well known
chain stores such as BHS have also established their presence in the
city.
