The Magna Carta
The Magna Carta
Magna Carta is also called Magna Carta Libertatum or the Great Charter of the Liberties of England. The 1215 Magna Carta was the first document that was enforced on an English King by a group of his subjects called the feudal barons. This was done in an effort to limit the King’s powers by law and protect their privileges. Originally issued in Latin in 1215, it was translated into vernacular-French in 1219 and later modified. However, the most direct challenges to the authority of the monarch that were in the 1215 charter were omitted from the modified versions. The charter was first passed into law in 1225. The charter’s 1297 version still remains on the statute books of England and Wales.
