French Quarter Tours
The French Quarter in New Orleans has many things to see and do, but visitors, especially those in the city for the first time, might want to go on a tour led by someone with greater knowledge about the region. Throughout the French Quarter, there are many different types of tours ranging from the historical to the bizarre, and from extensive and detailed to relaxed.
Walking tours are the easiest way to see the French Quarter. Tours led by university professor and historian Kenneth Holditch explore the area through literary eyes, including information about Tennessee Williams and Anne Rice. The Friends of Cabildo tour, which visits Madame John’s Legacy and the 1850 House, is about two hours long and is led by volunteers from the Louisiana State Museum system. Other walking tours include the 90-minute walk led by rangers through Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve and several offered by Gray Line: one that visits key points in the area, including Royal and Bourbon Streets, Jackson Square, and Washing Artillery Park, and another that focuses on the city’s history since Hurricane Katrina.
