Lincoln Castle was one of the first castles built by the Normans who, in order to secure their position and rapidly strengthen his victory, constructed a number of major castles throughout the north and midlands of England. One of the unique qualities of Lincoln Castle is that it has two mottes. There are only two such castles in England, and the other one is located at Lewes in Sussex. Lincoln Castle was constructed in the south-west corner of the upper walled town. According to the Domesday Book entry for Lincoln, 166 of the 1164 residences in the city were demolished so that the castle could be built.
