Decoding Waltzing Matilda

Decoding Waltzing Matilda

http://www.waltzingmatilda.org/decoding-waltzing-matilda.php

Waltzing Matilda is a known Australian bush ballad song with words written by Banjo Paterson and the tune played by Christina Macpherson. The tune was a Scottish song entitled Craigielea. Millions of Aussies as well as people from other nations are familiar with the song but majority of them do not have an idea of what the song is all about.

However, only a few really understand the true meaning of the song. The words that Paterson used are considered to be bush Australian slang making it more difficult to understand. For some, hearing Waltzing Matilda can bring frustration more than anything else.

Hard of Hearing Auto Insurance

Hard of Hearing Auto Insurance

http://www.deafautoinsurance.com/hard-of-hearing-auto-insurance.html

Some people consider driving to be a difficult task to do when unfocused, much more when disabled. Some can’t even imagine sitting in a car with a deaf or hard of hearing driver steering the wheel. This, however, is a false notion because hard of hearing and deaf drivers have been able to drive legally and safely for many years now.

“Hard of hearing” is a term that refers to people who have difficulty hearing due to hearing loss at birth or acquired or accidental hearing loss. Some people view this disability as a basis for hard of hearing people to not be given licenses to drive. In reality, people think hard of hearing drivers should not be able to drive legally because they might pose greater risks to themselves and to those driving around them.

Hard of hearing drivers have been driving legally because they acquire their licenses just as hearing people do. They pass an exam and go through driving tests too, only the method used is different. Driving teachers who teach hard of hearing and deaf drivers how to drive apply visual teaching; this may not necessarily be sign language but it is more gesture-related. Studies show that driving test and exam results of hearing and hard of hearing drivers only slightly differ.

Hard of hearing auto insurance is the same as normal auto insurance given to hearing drivers. Unless the DVLA, or the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, applies any condition to a hard of hearing driver’s license, auto insurance agencies cannot give higher quotes or premiums to hard of hearing drivers.

Deaf Auto Insurance

Deaf auto insurance is basically the same as auto insurance for the hearing drivers. As long as they have acquired their licenses legally and they have a car suited for them, they are given equal insurance coverage as others. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is the agency responsible for passing licenses of people who they deem capable of driving and driving safely. If and when they grant licenses, it would already mean that whatever medical or nonmedical condition these drivers have do not affect their driving abilities. Sometimes, the DVLA would apply conditions on some drivers' licenses. When that is the case, insurers are allowed to alter the usual or normal insurance quotes and premiums.

Waltzing Matilda : The Story

Waltzing Matilda : The Story

Waltzing Matilda is a famous Australian ballad that dates back to 1894. The words of the song were written by Andrew “Banjo” Paterson to the tune of The Craigielee March, which he heard Christina Macpherson play on the zither. Banjo Paterson was in Dagworth Station in Outback Australia visiting the Macpherson family when he wrote the lyrics. The tune that Christina Macpherson was playing inspired him to write the lyrics.

Waltzing Matilda combines two rather violent incidents that happened in Combo, Waterhole. One of these was the suicide of Hoffmeister and the found skin of a newly butchered sheep.

Waltzing Matilda : Typical Lyrics

Waltzing Matilda : Typical Lyrics

Banjo Paterson wrote the words of the famous Australian ballad ‘Waltzing Matilda'. The music came from a tune that Christina Macpherson played at a gathering at Dogworth Station. The tune that Macpherson played was a Scottish tune called Craigielea

The Waltzing Matilda typical lyrics are as follows. These are the original words as written by Banjo Patterson.
Oh, there once was a swagman camped in the billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree
And he sang as he looked at the old billy boiling
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?

Chorus

Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda my Darling
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?
Waltzing Matilda and leading a waterbag,
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?

Down came the jumbuck to drink at the waterhole
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee
And he sang as he put him away in his tucker-bag
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me.

Up came the Squatter a-ridding his thoroughbred
Up came Policemen - one, two and three
Whose is that jumbuck you've got in the tucker-bag

You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me.

The swagman he up and he jumped in the waterhole
Drowning himself by the coolibah tree
And his ghost may be heard as it sings by the billabong
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?
When the Billy Tea Company bought the copyright to the song and used it to advertise their product, they changes the line ‘drowning himself by the coolibah tree' to ‘you'll never take me alive'. The change on the Waltzing Matilda typical lyrics was due to the negative impression that ‘drowning' connotes.
Another variation of the Waltzing Matilda lyrics went like this:
Oh, there was once was a swagman camped in billabong
Under the shade of a Coolibah tree
And he sang as he looked at the old billy boiling
Who'll come a roving Australia with me?

Chorus:

Who'll come a rovin (the rest missing)
Who'll come a waltzin' Matilda with me?
Waltzing Matilda and leading a tucker bag
Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me?
An American singing group, The New Christy Minstrels released a version of Waltzing Matilda with a difference on the last verse of typical lyrics. It goes like this:
I'm just a simple swagman who'd be obliged to fare thee well
I'm just a journeying down to the sea
For it's God bless the Queen who gave to you this billabong
And it was God who gave that jumbuck to me.

Waltzing Matilda : History

Waltzing Matilda : History

The history of Waltzing Matilda dates back to 1895. Banjo Paterson, who was an Australian poet, wrote the words of the song. The music was written by Christina Macpherson. According to history, Banjo Paterson wrote the words to the song at the Dagworth Homestead in Queensland. He apparently heard Christina Macpherson playing a tune on a zither and decided to put lyrics to the tune. Christina Macpherson heard the tune from a band at the Races by Warnambool. The tune that she heard sounded like it was based from a Scottish song entitled “Thou Bonnie Wood of Craigielea”.

Banjo Paterson was a friend of Christina Macpherson’s brother, Bob. He was visiting the Macpherson family when he wrote the words to the Waltzing Matilda. During his stay with the Macpherson’s, he and Christina will collaborate on the song; he will write words and Christina will try it with the tune. Eventually, everyone in the District caught the song and was singing it.

Pros and Cons of Animal Trapping

Pros and Cons of Animal Trapping

The practice of animal trapping is a double-edged sword. If used for noble and good intentions it can be helpful and useful, yet we, as humans, always seem to find ways to inject the most malicious of intentions in everything we do. With the human population constantly growing and expanding, more and more wildlife are slowly getting run over. This development brings humans and animals closer to one another, and interactions between the two have oftentimes become inevitable, especially with many communities settling close and around former wilderness and woodland habitats, sometimes with unfavorable results.

Types of Animal Traps

Types of Animal Traps

http://www.trapping.info/types-of-animal-traps.php

Regulated animal trapping is allowable within the stipulated laws that preside over it. Regulated animal trapping to maintain the safety of human populated areas and to protect crops and farmlands are considered as reasonable and allowable purposes when it comes to trapping untamed beasts. Despite animal trapping laws it is proving difficult to prevent illegal activities such as enslaving and killing animals for numerous malicious intents, which all basically come down to making a quick buck.

There are different kinds of trappers such as pest control professionals, forest service workers and biologists, to name a few. They use different types of animal traps, some of which are prone to hurting the animals they ensnare. Because of this, the type of traps that are used will always be under scrutiny from animal rights and animal cruelty activists.

Animal Trapping Facts

Animal Trapping Facts

http://www.trapping.info/animal-trapping-facts.php

Animal trappings started out as a necessity for survival by the human race, for the main purpose of acquiring food, as well as protection from the elements by using the animal pelts and furs for clothing. Fast forward to today’s world, animal trapping for food and fur has become more of a luxury and recreation rather than a necessity. The fur industry in the United States alone, with the help of commercial fur trappers, is estimated to trap three to five million animals every year. The U.S. is also the country with the most captured animal for fur than any other across the globe. Along with the huge number of trapped animals for furs and pelts, a few other millions of animals who were not targeted by the traps were accidentally caught, including endangered wildlife species.

History of Animal Trapping

History of Animal Trapping

Animal trapping has been around probably since the time that humans and animals first interacted. In earlier times people would hunt animals for food and clothing, and some animals are too fierce and deadly to confront head on, too fast or cunning, or too big and powerful to physically subdue. This is when man turned to traps to overcome these deadly beasts that would be impossible to do otherwise. Hunting animals by means of traps not only kept the people away from harm, it also allowed for the capture of more animals than would be possible when done physically.

Overview of Animal Trappings

Overview of Animal Trappings

Animal trapping has been around since probably the Ice Age, when man needed animal fur to keep him warm. From the more primitive types that used nets or the hole-in-the-ground sort of traps, to the more current modern steel foothold traps or snares, traps have always been one of the means to capture an animal for a variety of reasons. One of the most basic reasons for animal trapping since its inception is for the purpose of food. It is one of the means employed by Homo sapiens for hunting. Almost any animal has been hunted for food by man, from wild dangerous beasts like lions and bears, to the more passive gazelles, deer and rabbits. Man has found many means and contraptions to capture a wild beast; nets that sprung from the ground, cages filled with bait to lure the animal inside and then rendering it unable to get out, digging holes in the ground and covering it with camouflage; these are the more common traps that man has made out in the wilds.

Skateboarding Ramps

Skateboarding Ramps

Street skateboarding has risen in popularity over the years, but there are always a few people who seek the thrill of vertical skateboarding. Vertical skateboarding is the type of skateboarding where, with the use of a ramp, the skateboarder can launch himself up in the air and perform various tricks. In fact, prior to the evolution of skateboarding into a street culture, it is skating with ramps that made the sport popular and captivatingly thrilling. With the help of the ramp, a skateboarder can launch himself virtually as high as 20 feet up into the air. For beginners though, it will be advisable to start with smaller ramp sizes to get the feel and to practice the basic moves and precautionary maneuvers when performing tricks and launching into the air. Once you have mastered the basics then that’s the time to move on to the more advanced and bigger skateboarding ramps.

Designer Pet Apparel

Designer Pet Apparel

http://petapparel.info/designer-pet-apparel.php

Designer clothing isn't just for fashionistas any longer. Lately, there's been steady growth in the designer pet apparel market. From statement shirts to frilly dresses, there are hundreds of available options that are fancy enough for dogs to rival or at least match their owner's sense of style.

There are several designer brands that are known for their dog clothing, specifically Oscar Newman, Louis Dog, Ruff Ruff Couture, and Kashwere. Even some well-known designers for humans have branched out into doggy apparel, such as Juicy Couture, which normally makes clothing and accessories for women and girls, and Christian Audigier, famous for his loud, graphically-oriented Ed Hardy brand, who has created a line of equally flashy t-shirts for Chrome Bones. Paris Hilton, who famously toted around her Chihuahua Tinkerbell for several years, also has her own line of pet clothing, including dresses and tanks, through Little Lily.

For designer pet wear, the cost is substantially higher than the clothing brands found at pet shops and discount stores. For example, a black argyle sweater from Kashwere costs about $70, a velour dog hoodie from Juicy Couture normally costs around $45, Louis Dog, Ruff Ruff Couture, and Oscar Newman dresses can range from $40 to $80 dollars, and items in the Paris Hilton collection start at around $20, on sale. You do pay for the name, but you hopefully also pay for higher quality fabric, superior craftsmanship, and durability.

Skateboarding Tricks

Skateboarding Tricks

Skateboarding has been popularized for the cool, sensational and intricate tricks and maneuvers that professionals perform. And as simple and easy as these professionals are making it seem, the truth is quite the opposite. It takes months and even years of practice to get the move right and perfect, with a lot of broken bones and cuts and bruises to go along with it.

If you are just starting out with skateboarding tricks and maneuvers, the best place to start is the Ollie. The Ollie is probably one of the basic and simplest tricks a skater should learn but the time for every individual to get it down pat has varied quite differently – it can range from a few weeks to more than a year of practicing. The Ollie is basically jumping off the ground and bringing your board along with you in the air. The Ollie is the most fundamental trick to learn as it will be the foundation for other skateboarding tricks that you will wish to learn in the future.

How To Skateboard

How To Skateboard

Skateboarding has become a significant and influential culture in today’s world. Its wow factor and the coolness that skateboarders exude make it popular to many teenagers and young adults alike, especially with big media coverage like ESPN’s Extreme Games. Even the kids in your neighborhood performing some street tricks are sure to have caught your attention more than once. Learning how to skateboard might come easily to some and not for others. As it is with learning to ride a bike, it is preferable to start at an earlier age rather than later. And you can expect that on your first few times on the board, there will be a lot of bumps and bruises, so be advised and wear protective gear such as helmets, elbow pads, and knee pads.

It is also advised that you wear proper clothing such as shoes with big flat soles and good traction, and clothes that will not get easily snagged onto something. Wrist braces can be optional but experts advise that you should not heavily rely on using your hands when catching yourself from a fall. Now that you look like you’re ready to skate, let’s hop on to the board.

Different Types of Pet Clothing

Different Types of Pet Clothing

http://petapparel.info/different-types-of-pet-clothing.php

Pet clothing is big business. Pampered pooches and cats can now don threads as fashionable as what their owners wear. Styles can range from silly costumes to practical outerwear, and the selection keeps on growing with demand for new looks, especially for dogs.

The simplest form of pet clothing is t-shirts, which works for both small and large dogs. Because the shirts are usually made of cotton, they’re breathable and allow the dog to function fairly normally. It might help to get a dog acquainted to clothing with a shirt before moving on to something more elaborate. Shirts come in an array of colors, prints, and designs, including various fun graphics and kitschy sayings like “I’m not fat… just fluffy” or “Rub my belly for good luck.”

There are also hoodies, polo shirts, and Hawaiian shirts for those looking for a little bit more flair, or pajamas and bathwear for the dogs hoping to settle in at home. There are also more formal clothes like tuxes and frilly dresses for special occasions like weddings.

Anyone who engages in any active sport or performance-based activities would be familiar with the fact that there will be precise specifications that would aid them in their activity. From running to biking all the way to team sports such as basketball, football and soccer, innovative products that address specific sports-related concerns are popping up everywhere. Even the clothing used to perform a particular sport has progressed; lightweight fabrics and element-protective materials are used depending on the need. This holds true with skateboarding, too.

People outside of the sport would not be able to tell the difference or the significance of a few inches’ difference between the dimensions of the boards, but to a skateboarding professional these few extra inches could mean a whole lot. With the evolution of skateboards from its early existence, different surfaces and performing tricks require different specific types and sizes of skateboards to achieve optimal execution. Some would also believe that using the wrong kind of board can lead to unfortunate situations.

Things to Consider When Buying Pet Apparel

Things to Consider When Buying Pet Apparel

Clothing pets, especially dogs, can be a fun way to show off their personality and style, but you should consider certain things before buying pet apparel.

First, you should know the correct size of your dog: the length and width of their body. A simple tape measure can help you get the accurate body measurements. Most manufacturers will include a size chart on their tag so you don’t have to rely on the traditional small, medium, and large labels.

Proper fit is important, especially when it comes to costumes and outfits that have multiple parts. The dog should be able to walk, see, hear, and smell properly. If the clothes are too loose, drag on the ground, or obstruct any of their senses, you or the dog could get hurt. Likewise, apparel with too many zippers, buttons, or doodads that could pop off could be a choking hazard for the dog. The dog’s safety should always come first when choosing apparel.

Pet Clothing

Pet Clothing

Clothing isn't just for humans anymore. Recently, there's been a boom in pet owners wanting to clothe their pets in everything from pajamas to coats. Dogs are usually the recipient of these clothes, whether to stay warm and dry or merely for their owner's amusement.

Pet clothing can be functional, decorative, or both. Some are basic t-shirts and windbreakers while others are embellished with furs and chain trim. The clothing is specially made to fit dogs of different breeds and sizes. However, decorative styles, such as seasonal costumes, especially for Halloween, or shirts or sweaters with kitschy patterns or sayings, are more popular for smaller breeds like Chihuahuas or Pomeranians. Larger dogs like Labradors usually wear functional clothing like weather protective gear. This is especially true for dogs that reside in areas with cold or wet conditions.

Although it may seem fun to dress dogs up in wild and crazy clothing, it’s important to take their comfort, happiness, and safety into account, too. Some dogs, such as long haired breeds, will be less comfortable in restrictive clothing. On the other hand, smaller dogs or those with less hair might benefit from the warmth of clothing during the winter months. Larger breeds have a limited choice in clothing, but as clothing for big dogs becomes more popular, there should be more options available.

History of Skateboarding

History of Skateboarding

http://www.rampworks.com/

Skateboarding is one of the most popular hobbies in America, and probably across other countries, that has a long winding history. Its inception actually dates back to the 1950s. With surfing's rise in popularity, it did not take long for people to think of a way to imitate the feat on solid ground. The conceptualization of the skateboard is claimed by several individuals; however, there is no actual evidence of who came up with it first.

The most fundamental yet crude concept of the skateboard used wooden planks on top of roller skate wheels, while other more sophisticated innovations got the idea to remove the handlebars from scooters. It was not long until the ability to surf the streets captured the interest of many folks despite the risk it posed to people.

French Quarter History

French Quarter History

http://www.noq.org/

Bienville named the city after Philippe d'Orléans, a member of the French royal family, to gain favor with the court. The influence of the French legacy can be seen throughout the town plan, central square (now called Jackson Square), street names, and various buildings, such as the Ursuline Convent, which is the only remaining building from this time period.

After the Spanish took over in 1762 when Louis XV transferred power over the region to his cousin Charles III of Spain, French colonists staged a revolution in 1768. However, the revolt was put down by then Governor Alejandro O'Reilly, who gained the nickname “Bloody O'Reilly” for his execution of well-known rebel Frenchmen.

The Spanish ruled New Orleans for about forty years. After the great fires of 1788 and 1794, much of the old French colonial architecture in the French Quarter, about 1,000 structures in total, including the main church, St. Louis Cathedral, and other governmental buildings, were destroyed. As such, much of the current landscape and architecture reflects the Spanish's presence in the area. During this time, the St. Louis Cathedral was rebuilt, in addition to the Presbytere, the courthouse, and the Cabildo, the city hall, all of which are still standing today.

History and Traditions of Mardi Gras

History and Traditions of Mardi Gras

Pierre’s younger brother, Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville established New Orleans on May 7, 1718 and so named it for Philippe d’Orleans, Duke of Orleans who was also Regent of France at the time. Even then, Colonial New Orleans was unique; racial diversity and their Creole culture placed much stock in a “live and let live” tolerance allowed for a free market economy where slaves could use their earnings to purchase their freedom, their owners’ objections notwithstanding. New Orleans was America’s first multicultural community.

Pre-Lenten balls and parties were held in the late 1700s where masked balls flourished under French rule. This was later banned by the Spanish governors, continuing until New Orleans became an American city in 1803. Balls were again authorized in 1823 and in 1827, street masking was also legalized.

Mardi Gras in the French Quarter

Mardi Gras in the French Quarter

Mardi Gras is an annual street festival held in New Orleans. Rooted in ancient traditions, it's a time of high spirits before the penitential season of Lent in the Roman Catholic religion, although one does not need to be Catholic to partake in the celebrations. Beginning on or after Epiphany, which commemorates the coming of the three kings for Western Christians, the party lasts for two weeks until the day before Ash Wednesday, or Fat Tuesday, so named because it's the last day to indulge before the ritual fasting begins. Depending on Easter's date, Mardi Gras can fall any time between February 3 and March 9.

During the two week celebration, there are daily parades, masquerade balls, king cake parties, and dozens of other festivities. Many tourists celebrate on Bourbon Street, although no major parades go through the French Quarter because of its narrow roads.

Street Performances in the French Quarter

Street Performances in the French Quarter

Every day, the French Quarter of New Orleans bustles with countless tourists, vendors, and street performers. Concentrated around Jackson Square and on Bourbon and Royal streets, the streets’ acts are designed to thrill and entertain the never-ending crowds. Although the street shows are usually free, most people make a living off of their performances so people shouldn’t be shy about placing money in the coffers if they enjoyed the show or took a picture of or with the performer.

Permits to perform in New Orleans used to be obtained at the courthouse for $15 per year, but since Hurricane Katrina, permits are seemingly no longer required. However, there is still a code of ordinance that performers must adhere to when performing for money, commonly known as busking. Also, permits are valid in the central district, but performers are restricted from entertaining on Bourbon Street from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Some performers cover themselves in metallic body paint and stand as still as statues. One woman, dubbed the Jilted Bride, stands on the edge of Jackson Square dressed in an antique wedding gown, her skin covered with gold paint. Other live statues include Uncle Louis and his dog Little Willie, a French Quarter icon on Royal Street since 1993. Another act called Robo Tron in Jackson Square is covered from head to toe in silver and combines his costume with music and dance moves.

The French Quarter

The French Quarter

The French Quarter, or Vieux CarrĂ© (Old Square in French), is the oldest and most famous neighborhood in New Orleans. It was founded by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville in 1718 and stretches along the Mississippi River from Canal Street to Esplanade Avenue and inland to North Rampart Street. More commonly referred to these days as “The Quarter”, it contains numerous historic buildings and is a National Historic Landmark as a whole.

A great many of the buildings that can be seen in the French Quarter today date back to the years before New Orleans was established as a part of the United States. Due to the Great New Orleans Fire in 1788 and another great fire in 1794, much of The Quarter’s French colonial architecture was destroyed. A majority of the surviving 18th century architecture of the neighborhood date to the time of Spanish rule, who rebuilt and controlled it until it reverted to French control in 1801. As a result, semi-fortified streetscapes, wall-plastered brick houses, walled courtyards, colorful walls and roofs and wrought iron balconies and more from the 18th and 19th century can be seen all throughout the French Quarter to this day.

The French Quarter, or "Vieux Carre," in New Orleans runs about 13 blocks along the Mississippi River from Canal Street to Esplanade Avenue and 6 blocks from Rampart Street to the Mississippi. Visitors usually visit the “Upper Quarter,” between Jackson Square and Canal Street, but there are also shops in the “Lower Quarter.”

Jackson Square lies at the center of the French Quarter. The open park, named after former president Andrew Jackson, is surrounded by three historic buildings: the Cabildo, the old city hall turned museum which was the site of the Louisiana Purchase transfer ceremonies; the St. Louis Cathedral, the oldest Roman Catholic Cathedral which was designated by Pope Paul VI as a minor basilica; and the Presbytere, a courthouse turned museum.

French Quarter History

French Quarter History

New Orleans's French Quarter, also known as Vieux CarrĂ© or simply “the Quarter” to locals, was founded in 1718 by a French Canadian naval officer named Jean Baptiste Bienville. Before his arrival, the area had been inhabited by Native Americans, like the Choctaw.

The land sits on a crescent near the Mississippi River, and is arranged in a military-style grid of seventy squares extending 13 blocks from Esplanade Avenue to Canal Street and about seven blocks from North Rampart Street to the Mississippi's shore. As the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans, it has been dubbed a National Historic Landmark, and has several historic buildings within it.

History and Traditions of Mardi Gras

History and Traditions of Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras refers to the culmination of events of the Carnival celebrations beginning on or after Epiphany and ending on Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday” when translated to English, in reference to the last night of consuming rich, fatty foods before the ritual of fasting that the Lenten season brings. The carnival is an important celebration for Catholic Europeans, such as the French, who brought the Mardi Gras to North America.

French Canadian Pierre D’Iberville and his men explored the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico and in 1699, set up camp on the river’s West Bank, 60 miles south of present-day New Orleans. They christened it Pointe du Mardi Gras on Mardi Gras Day.
