Millenium Seed Bank Project
Seed banks exist to preserve the plant seeds that are essential for human survival. Not only do they support crop biodiversity, but they're also an insurance policy against potential catastrophes like disease, war, or natural disasters. Because humans are so dependent on plant life, as they provide oxygen, clean water, clothing fibers, medicine, and about 75 percent of food for human consumption, anything that could threaten the existence of plants would be catastrophic. As it is, as many as 100,000 plant species, or about a quarter of all plant life, are facing extinction, namely due to climate change and the over-exploitation of certain crops by humans.
