Domain name registration starts off with the company giving the domain name registrar the domain name or list of domain names they would like to use for their website. The domain name registrar will then verify if the domain name chosen by their client is not yet being used. To do this, they look at a list of domain names that are currently being used in the international DNS (Domain Name Server) records of the ICANN. If the domain name registrar does not find any match in the records, they can then proceed with the registration of the chosen domain name of their client.
The domain name registrar will then ask for the contact details of the individual or company to whom the domain name will be registered to. This information will be used for the WHOIS records, which contains all the names of registered owners of different domain names. Some domain name registrars use their own names in the WHOIS records since there are some people or companies who do not want to give out their contact details. This may be disadvantageous since there may come a time when the domain name owner may have difficulties if they would like to transfer their domain name or website to another host or domain name registrar. This is why people should only transact domain name registrations with ICANN-recognized registrars.
