Improving indoor air quality is easier after the building occupant is already aware of what pollutants to minimize or eliminate. There following simple steps on how to improve indoor air quality may be practiced by all:
- 1. There are many types of air cleaners being sold in the market today. There re are cheap table-top models as well as more expensive systems that cater to the whole house. The ability of air cleaners to remove particles in the air determines its efficacy. However, air cleaners are limited to solid pollutants and not gaseous pollutants.
- 2. It is important to determine the pollutants in the building or home. This way, individual sources of pollution may be eliminated or reduced. This is probably the simplest, most practical and effective way to improve indoor air pollution. An example of this is by sealing containers of sources of asbestos. Also, gas stoves usually emit some pollutants and these emissions should be decreased.
- 3. Improving ventilation is a good way to improve indoor air quality. This means that air from outside should be allowed to come in the building and air within the building must also be allowed to circulate. This can be done by simply opening windows and doors and using fans that shoot exhaust outside.

First, it is important to determine the types of pollutants the building owner is dealing with. This way, steps targeted to eliminate or reduce these pollutants may be done.
