The Fenian Brotherhood | Information on the Fenian Movement and Brotherhood
The Fenian Brotherhood, an Irish republican organization, was founded in 1858 in the United States by John O’Mahony and Michael Doheny. The members of the organization were more commonly known as the Fenians, named after a renowned band of Irish warriors from the 2nd and 3rd centuries, called the Fianna. The Fianna were led by Fionn mac Cumhaill.
The great rebellion never materialized and the Fenian Brotherhood did not actually achieve their goal of an independent Ireland; however, they successfully passed the torch of patriotism to younger Irish generations which became a formidable force to be reckoned with who eventually won freedom for Ireland.
