Seedbanks, a type of gene bank, store seeds to preserve the plant genetic materials of major food crop plants, their crop wild relatives, or rare species. Reasons for storing the seeds vary, but include maintaining biodiversity and guarding against natural disasters, disease, or war. In some cases, seeds are kept for crops that were once used for commercial production, but that are now becoming rare since their nonuse.
