Norway Seed Vault

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a “doomsday” seedbank located near the village of Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen, a remote Norwegian island in the Arctic Svalbard archipelago. Approximately 800 miles from the North Pole, the underground facility, carved about 400 feet inside a frozen mountainside, eventually will store seed samples of about three million crop varieties. The hope is that the high-tech vault will prevent the extinction of agricultural crops in case of war, natural disasters, disease, or lack of funding. The project also aims to preserve seeds of rarer crop varieties that are slowly becoming extinct, specifically the top 10 percent most endangered plants.
