The Fenian movement, comprised of members who called themselves the Fenians, desired independence for Ireland from British rule.

Fenian movement also encountered difficulties along the way. The distance between the two groups meant significant problems with communication. Additionally, Stephens and O’Mahony differed in their belief of how the movement should grow. O’Mahony preferred to move in secret and highly disapproved of Stephens’ decision to found a weekly newspaper which he called the Irish People.
