Born on February 17, 1864, Andrew Barton Paterson was the son of Scottish immigrant Andrew Bogle Paterson, from Lanarkshire, and Australian-born Rose Isabella Barton. His family called him “Barty”. The name Banjo came in a little later in his life. His birthplace was in Narrambia near Orange, New South Wales but he and his family lived on the isolated Buckinbah Station in the Manaro until he was five years old. Upon his uncle’s demise, his family took over his farm in Illalong near Yaas district.

Banjo Paterson’s early education was at home under a governess. When he started riding ponies/horses, Banjo Paterson went to the bush school in Binalong. When he was 10 years old, he started attending the Sydney Grammar School and performed well in academics and sports. During the school year, Banjo Paterson lived with his grandmother in Gladsville and would go back home to Illalong during the vacation.
