James Stephens, born on January 26, 1825, was a founding member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. The organization was founded in 1858 in order to obtain Ireland’s freedom from Britain. The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) had close ties with the Fenian Brotherhood which was founded in the United States by John O’Mahony. Primarily, the Fenians (as the members of the Fenian Brotherhood were more commonly known) aimed to support the IRB with soldiers, arms and funds for a planned uprising.

Stephens was born to John and Anne Stephens. His father was an auctioneer’s clerk and a strong supporter of the rights of native Irish. By his mid-twenties, Stephens had become a revolutionary spirit. He aligned himself with the Young Ireland and served as aide-de-camp to William Smith O’Brien in the failed 1848 rising.

Stephens, together with John O’Mahony and other members of the Young Ireland, fled to France to avoid arrest after the collapse of the 1848 rebellion. While in Paris, they supported themselves by teaching and translating, and planned their next stage of their movement.
