Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa

Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa

The Fenians were members of the Fenian Brotherhood and the Irish Republic Brotherhood. Both organizations were formed with the intent to secure liberty for Ireland from Britain. The Fenians are named after the Fianna, a legendary band of Irish warriors from the 2nd and 3rd centuries who were led by Fionn mac Cumhaill.

John O’Mahony and Michael Doheny were the founders of the Fenian Brotherhood which was based in the United States. The aim of the Fenian Brotherhood was to supply money, arms and soldiers to their sister organization in Ireland, the Irish Republic Brotherhood, led by James Stephens. There were other brave and prominent Fenians who worked alongside these men, risking their lives to fight for freedom and spreading Fenianism. Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa was one of them.
