Allergy Symptoms and Signs

Allergic reactions vary depending on the part of the body that is affected and the severity of the reaction. Mild reactions may be localized and limited to a body part while there are allergic reactions that affect multiple systems in the body. Additionally, individuals can react differently to the same allergens.

Mild allergy symptoms can include a rash, itchy and/or watery eyes and congestion. Mild allergic reactions usually do not spread to other parts of the body.

Moderate allergy symptoms can include difficulty breathing, cough, headache, hoarseness of voice, wheezing, swelling of the area around the eyes and face and swelling and itching of the skin. Moderate allergic reactions can sometimes spread to other parts of the body.

Anaphylaxis is the combination of allergic symptoms that affect the whole body severely, rapidly and suddenly. This can be life-threatening and immediate medical attention should be given to a person suspected of suffering from anaphylaxis. Anaphylactic shock refers to the insufficient circulation of blood to organs of the body due to a dangerously low blood pressure. It can lead to unconsciousness, cardiac arrest and even death.
