It is said that there is no cure for allergies; the treatment available to the public deals with alleviating the symptoms of allergies. Over the decades, a vast improvement has been seen with regards to the medical procedures employed to treat allergic conditions. There are now numerous options for allergy treatment and some can even be bought over-the-counter for quick relief of annoying allergic symptoms. Prescription allergy drugs and allergy shots are also available for this purpose.

The traditional and most effective management of allergies is to avoid the allergen that triggers reactions or to reduce exposure to them. It seems simple enough, particularly in the case of food allergies: persons allergic to nuts should avoid consuming foods that contain nuts; individuals who have allergic reactions to cats should limit contact with them. Antihistamines come in different forms including pills, nasal sprays, eye drops or liquids. Antihistamines work by inhibiting the action of histamine, blocking it from attaching to histamine receptors that cause stuffy or runny nose, itchy and redness of the eyes and itchy rash on skin, such as hives. There are antihistamines that can be bought over-the-counter and there are some that are only available by prescription.
