Allergy Types

An allergy is a disorder of the immune system that is associated with the hypersensitivity to certain substances which are normally harmless. These substances are referred to as allergens, and they can cause allergic reactions when they come into contact with the eyes or skin, when they are inhaled, ingested or injected into the body. As such, there are different types of allergies; however, their symptoms are usually the same. Some typical symptoms are:
  • Watery and itchy eyes
  • Runny nose, stuffy nose
  • Sneezing
  • Swelling around the mouth, nose and throat
  • Itchy skin, swelling of the skin
  • Rashes
  • Wheezing and coughing, asthma
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is usually inherited. It is characterized by an allergic reaction to pollen and other airborne particles such as house dust mites, feathers, animal dander and mold. There are two types of hay fever. Seasonal hay fever occurs only during a certain time of the year when certain plants pollinate. Perennial hay fever occurs all year round. Common symptoms include swelling of the nasal mucosa, stuffy or runny nose and sneezing.
