A Notary Public is a person appointed by the state government to perform notarial acts or notarizations. These include certification of documents, deeds, depositions, execution of power-of-attorneys and administer oaths. A notary public must impartial at all times and should be certain that the documents or agreements he/she is authenticating is genuine since he/she is responsible for it. When the document turns out to be forged or fake, the notary may face criminal charges.

How does one become a notary? In the USA, every state has its own guidelines on how to become a notary. It is not that hard to become a notary and no special schooling or education is needed to become one. In some states, though, candidates are required to pass an examination. Background history is also important and one of the things that the government looks into. Most states, if not all, would refuse appointing a notary with criminal records. It is important to know also that even though a notary is authorized to authenticate deeds and other documents, he/she should not offer legal counsel to anyone or practice law or prepare legal documents.
