CSS Virginia Crew

CSS Virginia was the very first ironclad, steam-powered warship of the Confederate States Navy. It was built during the American Civil War. CSS Virginia was salvaged from the scuttled USS Merrimack. John L. Potter, Lieutenant John Brooke and Navy’s Chief Engineer William P. Williamson were commissioned to turn USS Merrimack into an ironclad warship for the Confederate Navy.

CSS Virginia was designed to hold a crew of about 300 people. Initially, Lt. Wood of the New Orleans regiment of General Magruder’s army selected 80 sailors from the 200 volunteers. A few came from the Confederate flotilla in Pamlico Sound. There were also around 120 who came from the Army batteries in the Tidewater region, as well as a few foreign citizens.
