To keep you from being victimized by these fraudulent individuals, we offer the following tips to aid you in avoiding online job scams.
  1. Be aware of the most common “Red Flags” for online job scams. Red flags for online job scams can easily be detected if you know what to look for. First and foremost is to check for incorrect spellings and grammatical errors in the job ads. If you can find even just a few, chances are it is questionable in integrity. Another major red flag you can spot is if the contact email address of the employer uses webmail domains such as @yahoo.com or @gmail.com and is dissimilar to the primary domain of the organization that the employer is claiming to be working for. Take for example Adam is an employer of Blizzard Entertainment so his contact email should be something along the lines of Adam@blizzardEntertainment.com.
  2. Be careful of jobs that are requesting for your personal information more than what you can give away in your resume. Never reveal personal information such as your bank account number or your social security number before you are even hired. There is no valid reason for an employer to require you to provide this information. Be wary especially if the employer asks for your credit card information.
  3. Avoid online jobs that require you to pay a certain amount of money or fees. More than likely this type of work offer will be a rip-off. Never entertain employers that will require you to pay certain fees to advance on the job application or to be considered for application.
  4. Apply to online jobs from highly regarded employers. If possible find your online work that can be recommended by someone you know in real life or someone that you can trust. What’s even better is if you can do online work for someone that you know personally, or if someone that you know is already working for or has worked with that employer in the past.
  5. Be cautious of online jobs that require the use of your personal bank accounts for transfer of funds as part of the working transactions. You should know the limits that you have to set for the job.
  6. Don’t be shy to ask for the company’s credentials and to do a background check of your own. It is not only the employer who has the right to make sure if the person he is dealing with is reliable. This will be a somewhat last resort towards precaution and can be harder to determine since most fraud artists would go so far as to prepare a good company backdrop to work on, complete with company logos.
