Allergies | Allergy Drugs

An allergy is defined as an abnormally high sensitivity to certain substances such as food, pollen, microorganisms – normally harmless substances. It is a disorder of the immune system. Allergies have become quite common that statistics show that at least one out of every five Americans suffers from them.

There are numerous known causes of allergies including, but not limited to, some food, such as peanuts, eggs, dairy products, fish, etc.; airborne particles such as pollen, dust mites, animal proteins found in dander, urine, etc., mold spores and insect parts; a person’s genes; as well as other environmental factors and even hygiene. Insect venoms, certain medications and vaccines can also cause allergic reactions in people.

Genes play an integral part as allergies seem to run in families. A child is likely to inherit allergies from allergic parents and these allergies are possibly going to be more severe than if he or she had non-allergic parents. Although the chances of developing allergies are likely to be inherited from one’s parents, the specific allergen is not. One does not necessarily inherit the exact same allergies or diseases as his or her parents.

Other significant risk factors for allergy is exposure to allergen, the intensity and frequency of exposure and of course, the earlier in life it takes place, the more likely it is for allergies to develop.
