Career | Joe DiMaggio
Joe DiMaggio began using baseball as an excuse to escape chores and fishing when he and his two brothers, older brother Vince and younger brother Dominic (both would eventually have their own stint with the Major Leagues) would run away to the neighborhood playgrounds. Joe was ten years old when he had his very first baseball experience.
Eventually Joe’s interest in baseball waned. Only when his brother began playing for the minor league team, the San Francisco Seals, did his interest for baseball resurface. With Vince’s encouragement and faith in his gift for the game, Joe DiMaggio began pursuing his own baseball career and he never looked back since. Joe joined his brother by playing for San Francisco and launched his professional career in April 12, 1932. He went on to play three games for the Seals to finish off the 1932 season. In his first full year playing in the minor league, Joe would have a batting average of 0.34 and 28 home runs for the season. Joe would also accomplish an astounding feat in minor league history by making a 61-game hitting streak that would gain him national recognition. As the fame for his talent in baseball rose, the New York Yankees showed interest in Joe and bought out Joe’s contract from San Francisco. After the deal was done Joe would stay and play with the Seals for one more year due to a knee injury before going over to the Major Leagues. On his final year in the Minor League, Joe posted a 0.389 batting average and 34 home runs.
