Blood Allergy Tests | Allergy Tests

Blood Allergy Tests | Allergy Tests

Blood allergy tests are used to screen for allergy to a specific substance. Together with your medical history, blood allergy tests help you and your doctor narrow down the factors that trigger your allergy. Blood allergy tests are done to those who cannot undergo or tolerate skin allergy testing.

There are different types of blood allergy tests that are being administered today. The most common is the ELISA or EIA- enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. ELISA looks for a substance in the blood called antibodies such as immunoglobulin E or IgE. The level of the antibody present in the blood will be able to tell if the person has allergies.

The doctor usually orders this specific blood allergy test when the patient exhibits one or more of the following signs and symptoms: dermatitis, hives, red itchy eyes, eczema, asthma, itching and tingling in the mouth, coughing, nasal congestion or sneezing, abdominal pain, diarrhea or vomiting.
Sometimes this test is also used to determine whether a child has outgrown an allergy.

When a person or patient tests negative on the IgE antibody blood allergy test it can mean that he/she is not suffering from an allergy. But there is still a possibility that the person does have an allergy after all. That is why this test should be used with caution and under the supervision or advice of the doctor.
