Born Guiseppe Paolo DiMaggio in Martinez, California, Joe is the fourth son and eighth offspring of Guiseppe and Rosalie DiMaggio who migrated to America in 1898 from their native coastal town of Isola delle Femmine in Sicily, Italy, where their family had been fishermen for generations. Joe was born on November 25, 1914, and after a year his family moved to the northern beaches of San Francisco in the hopes of better fishing opportunities that would improve their way of life.
